Building a New Organization from the Ground Up
When Indy Economic Development was established as a new independent entity, it required rapid operational setup, strategic leadership, and seamless execution to ensure a smooth transition from its former structure within the Indy Chamber. With a new CEO, three retained staff, and no existing operational framework, the challenge was clear: stand up a fully functioning organization—fast.
As a consultant, I stepped in to provide fractional COO services and interim leadership, ensuring the organization had the necessary systems, staff, and structure in place to hit the ground running.
My Role: Fractional COO & Implementation Lead
Standing Up Core Operations – I worked behind the scenes to build the essential business infrastructure for a new, independent nonprofit, coordinating with legal advisors on business registration, bylaws, and nonprofit compliance.
Technology & Communications Setup – Implemented new email and tech systems, ensuring seamless internal and external communication. Launched a new website to establish Indy Economic Development’s online presence.
HR & Hiring Processes – Developed HR systems, policies, benefits administration, and hiring processes to support a growing team. Assisted in staffing up, ensuring the right talent was in place to support the organization’s mission.
Office & Space Transition – Managed the logistics of moving into a new office space, overseeing setup, infrastructure, and workspace functionality.
Financial & Banking Setup – Established financial management systems, bank accounts, and internal controls, ensuring fiscal responsibility and smooth operations.
Interim Project Leadership – Provided hands-on leadership in key projects during the transition, ensuring ongoing economic development efforts didn’t lose momentum.
Results & Impact
Fully operational within two months – Indy Economic Development transitioned into an independent organization quickly and efficiently, with the necessary staff, systems, and infrastructure in place to succeed.
